Known as the “City of Three Cultures,” Toledo’s unique blend of Christian, Muslim and Jewish influences can be seen around every corner. Students can wander through narrow cobblestone streets, discovering hidden treasures, from ancient city walls to majestic structures like the Toledo Cathedral. Your students will get a deeper understanding of the Spanish language by interacting with the locals and sampling the authentic cuisine.

Our team of travel specialists and former MFL teachers know the importance of real-world learning when it comes to languages. That’s why our itineraries step away from the general and focus on providing unique activities that encourage engagement with locals and learning through fun activities that allow students to explore a region’s unique culture and diversity.

Throughout your trip, a specialist local Language School Tour Leader will guide you, leading engaging activities, and ensuring that your key learning objectives are met. Your students will also benefit from our various pedagogical activities. Day

1

Walking tour of Toledo and Flamenco dance lesson

After touching down at Madrid airport, you’ll hit the ground running with a guided walking tour of Toledo.

This is a great opportunity to teach your students about the city’s fascinating legends. You’ll discover Toledo’s history by following a map to get a deeper insight into the destination.

Next, you’ll visit the Alcázar, a stone fortification located in the highest part of Toledo. The Alcázar was once used as a Roman palace in the 3rd century, and after being restored in 1535, it was a symbol of Spanish nationalism during the Spanish Civil War. Today, it’s the site of the city’s Army Museum and showcases Renaissance style.

You’ll end the day with a taste of Spanish culture at your dance lesson! Students will learn different Spanish dances, including the iconic Flamenco. This is a great way to get an insight into the culture while practising language skills as instructions are given in Spanish.

Day

2

Visits to the market, Toledo Cathedral and El Greco Museum

Head to the market to feel the hustle and bustle of locals chatting and shopping. Students can practise Spanish by buying their favourite Spanish food like Manchego, marzipan, and Magdalena.

Next up is the Toledo Cathedral. The medieval Gothic cathedral is built on top of a Muslim mosque and boasts works by Velázquez, Goya, Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael and El Greco. The spectacular cathedral represents different religious influences on the city, helping students gain an appreciation for how this shaped the Spanish language.

The culture continues as you head to the El Greco Museum. The museum is in the Jewish Quarter and celebrates the mannerist painter, El Greco, who spent much of his life in Toledo. You’ll see how the city inspired his artwork and admire the stunning architecture of the 16th-century house and courtyard.

Day

3

See Toledo Town Hall and have a cooking lesson

This morning is all fun and games as you start the day with Spanish board games! A great way to practice a new language is by following instructions and learning new expressions as you win or lose.

Afterwards, visit Toledo Town Hall and learn how the city is governed. Students will gain invaluable insight as a councillor shows you around the historic palace.

Next, get a taste of Spain (literally!) by learning how to make the tastiest tapas with an interactive cooking lesson. A Spanish chef will teach your students how to prepare and cook traditional dishes. This is a great way to get a glimpse into the culture by practicing the language in a real-life context.

End the day with traditional games out and about in Toledo. Spark some healthy competition with students while giving them a great opportunity to practice their newly learnt Spanish.

Day

4

Street interviews, marzipan factory visit, and a treasure hunt

This morning, students will enhance their Spanish skills by getting to know the locals. Students will be tasked with street interviews where they will ask Toledo residents questions about anything from information about the city, their favourite sights or what they’re up to today. These interviews will push students out of their comfort zone and put their Spanish to the test!

Next, you’re in for a sweet treat at the Marzipan Factory. Toledo is famous for many things; steelmaking, Don Quixote and marzipan! Students will learn why it’s a Toledo favourite and how it’s made.

Spend the afternoon exploring the city with a Toledo treasure hunt! Your students can ask the locals for help finding the answers to clues while discovering new places. There’s also a prize for the winning team!

To end the day, students will make and share presentations about their experiences. These are a great way to reminisce over some highlights and reflect on what they’ve learnt.
