“The trip was fantastic and truly unbelievable. Our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, their favourite parts including the drive up to Vesuvius and the free time in Amalfi Town. The team at Discover The World Education were fantastic and any issues we encountered whilst away were dealt with quickly and efficiently. We plan on making this a yearly trip! ”

Day

1

Naples Underground & Naples archaeological museum

Arriving in Naples, students will launch straight into the action. Firstly, getting to know a different side of Naples. Beneath the bustling streets lies a labyrinth of chambers and tunnels, where students will see ancient Roman theatres and aqueducts, among many more historical marvels. Dating back over 2,500 years these tunnels have been used by Neapolitan people for a variety of reasons and provide a unique window into the past.

Students will then get a chance to see more of the city’s history at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, which hosts one of the world’s best collections of Greek and Roman antiquities, including sculptures, gems, silver, glass and mosaics, many of which were excavated from the nearby ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Day

2

Paestum Archaeological Excavations & Museum and Pompeii

Today, students get a real chance to immerse themselves in the life of the ancient Romans.

Starting with a visit to Paestum Archaeological Excavations & Museum. Here students will find a complex of ruined ancient temples to Hera, Athena & Neptune, an amphitheatre and a museum which helps to contextualise everything they have just seen.

Next, students will have a chance to visit one of the most iconic sites this area offers. Students will head into the town where the looming Mount Vesuvius was buried in 79AD, Pompeii. The town was preserved in the eruption and is a fascinating place for all history students to discover.

Your knowledgeable guide will show you the ruins of the forum, temples, villas, gladiatorial arena, theatre and bathhouses and will explain what life was like in ancient Roman times. Students will also see the streets of Pompeii come back to life with a virtual reality tour which uses the latest technology to provide an immersive experience.

Day

3

Capri day tour

Catch a ferry to the small island of Capri. Known for its rugged rocks, caverns and coves, Capri’s limestone geology provides a stunning coastal landscape to demonstrate the erosive power of the sea to your geography students.

The island attracts holidaymakers seeking luxury with its plentiful boutiques and restaurants.

There are two main towns; Anacapri and Capri. From Anacapri, you can also choose to take a chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro for spectacular views over the island and the Bay of Naples.

Day

4

Herculaneum and Sorrento

Today, students will get a chance to hear another side of a story they have already learnt so much about. Herculaneum was heavily impacted by the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii. In contrast to the commerce and trade environment of Pompeii, Herculaneum was a wealthy Roman town with many fine residential villas. Herculaneum was buried by pyroclastic and hot mud flow which became Tufa ‘soft volcanic rock’. This had a preserving effect on many artefacts which can still be seen today.

Your guide will introduce your group to the highlights of the settlement and provide you with an insight into Roman life and how the eruption preserved the town.

Students will get a chance to enjoy some free time in Sorrento. As well as a rich and long history, Sorrento is best known for its epic views, beautiful beaches and delightful shops and cafes. This is a perfect place to pick up your souvenirs!
