Almuñécar: Superior Trip Spain

5 Days

Almuñécar, celebrated for its beautiful beaches, tropical microclimate, and historical heritage, offers an excellent setting for language learners to enhance their studies with native speakers away from the popular tourist towns.

Situated on Spain's Costa Tropical, students can safely navigate this charming town, putting their classroom knowledge into practice through real-world scenarios and interactions with friendly locals. The town's vibrant festivals and authentic culinary delights provide a rich learning environment, while the region’s forts, castles, and Roman architecture provide a deep historical background.

The nearby towns of Nerja, Frijiliana, and Salobreña offer additional opportunities to explore and practice. In contrast, the city of Granada provides an exciting day trip to explore the region’s Arabic influence at La Alhambra and El Albaicín.

Our team of travel specialists and former MFL teachers know the importance of real-world learning when it comes to languages. That’s why our itineraries step away from the general and focus on providing unique activities that encourage engagement with locals and learning through fun activities that allow students to explore a region’s unique culture and diversity.

Throughout your trip, a specialist local Language School Tour Leader will guide you, leading engaging activities and ensuring that your key learning objectives are met. Your students will also benefit from our various pedagogical activities. These on-the-go sessions provide the ultimate classroom without walls, allowing your students to engage in targeted workshops and tailored teaching in local settings, all with an enhanced educational focus. With a maximum ratio of 15:1, your students have every opportunity to deepen their learning and build their confidence in real-world settings.

Walking tour of Almuñécar and team games on the tropical coast

Landing in Málaga, you’ll be greeted by the warmth in the air and the bright blue waters of the Mediterranean. From here, it’s around 1.5 hours by coach along the beautiful coastline to the town of Almuñécar.

Arriving into town, you’ll settle in to your hotel before being met by your Language School Tour Leader from the TCL Language School. As a local from the area, they will take you out on a guided walk around Almuñécar to give you a fascinating insight into the history of the area, the unique microclimate, the local industries, and the culture and traditions of the town. This tour is a pedagogical activity that will be provided in Spanish, though it will be adapted to best suit your class’s abilities. Students will be encouraged to ask and answer questions, and to practice their pronunciation.

To end the day, students will head to the coast to enjoy some team games on the beautiful, sandy beach. This is a great way to unwind, blow off some steam, and bond as a group over some friendly competition.

Day

2

Shopping in the market, visit to the castle and a Salsa dance class

This morning, students will start their day with a 1-hour language workshop at the TCL language school in town. This workshop will focus on the key vocabulary and phrases that the students can use in their activities throughout the day, and will give them more clarity on how best to apply themselves in their tasks.

Building upon the morning’s workshop, students will visit Almuñécar’s bustling market with their Language School Tour Leader for a 2-hour pedagogical activity. Using the language and phrases that they practiced earlier, small groups will explore the market and talk with the vendors to complete a series of tasks. Whether it’s completing a shopping list, bartering prices down, or asking specific questions, they will build their confidence as they converse with the friendly locals. They may even pick up a sweet Spanish treat to enjoy!

In the afternoon, it’ll be time for a local history lesson at Castillo de San Miguel. This impressive castle sits on a small hill overlooking the town, and highlights a rich history of multiple occupations, including the Arabs, Phoenicians, and the Romans. Your Language School Tour Leader will guide students around the impressive fortress and provide commentary in Spanish about the fascinating history of the castle and the wider region in general.

The day will then finish with a fun Bachata and Salsa workshop. Working with a professional tutor, students will learn the basics of these traditional Spanish dances, as well as their ties to the Latin culture that originated in Spain before spreading overseas.

Day

3

Cooking workshop and sub-tropical farm visit

This morning, students will return to the TCL language school for a 2-hour language workshop. Students will have the opportunity to work on key phrases and vocabulary that they can use in their activities today, as well as brushing up on any language hurdles that they’ve come across so far.

From here, a coach will take the group to La Herradura, a small town just west along the coast, where they can enjoy a range a food-related activities.

The first will be a cooking workshop in one of the local restaurants, with a focus on a classic Spanish dish that is emblematic of the region; paella! Working with your Language School Tour Leader, and building upon the phrases and instructions from the morning’s language workshop, students will learn how to cook the perfect paella, as well as giving and receiving instructions in Spanish. Through repetition and associating phrases with actions, students will not only learn how to cook a delicious paella, but also get to taste and enjoy the dish down at the local beach bar.

Finally, students will head to Finca San Ramón, a subtropical farm located just above the town. They will learn about the unique microclimate of the region and how it allows the farm to grow tropical fruit throughout the year. As they explore the farm, students will learn about the different growing and harvesting techniques used here, and they’ll get to pick and sample some of the produce. A delicious activity to end the day.

Day

4

Excursion to Granda and visit to the Alhambra Palace

Today is an exciting day excursion to the nearby city of Granada. Travelling by coach, students will get to explore the city’s rich and varied history, learn more about its regional influence today, and discover the key sites that make this city is a must-see destination.

Your Language School Tour Leader will take students on a guided walk around the historic centre of Granada, as well as the Albaicín neighbourhood. Otherwise known as the Arabic quarter, the Albaicín is the most picturesque and ancient quarter of the city, with cobbled streets, open squares, and beautifully adorned houses set on a hillside with views of the Alhambra. You’ll find plenty of tapas restaurants, independent vendors, and traditional Spanish music as you explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

No trip to Granada would be complete without visiting the Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens. Perfectly perched on a hill above the city, the Alhambra highlights some of the finest Moorish architecture found anywhere in the world. With intricate geometric designs adorning almost every inch of the palace, students will be amazed at the detail and craftsmanship of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your Language School Tour Leader will guide you around the site and provide students with a deeper insight into the Islamic dynasties that once ruled this area of Spain, and how their influence lives on to this day.

Tapas workshop before heading home

Your final day in southern Spain will begin with one last language workshop at TCL. This 1-hour class will be tailored to your key learning objectives, and will highlight all that the students have learnt from their time in Almuñécar. It will also ensure that they’re prepared for their final pedagogical workshop.

To excite your tastebuds one last time before you head home, students will enjoy a tapas workshop. They’ll learn to create delicious tapas, and taste a variety of typical dishes, such as Spanish omelette, gazpacho, or paella. Students can ask and answer questions in Spanish to learn more about Spanish gastronomy, and hopefully take away some key skills to try in the kitchen at home.

Finally, students will collect their bags and depart for the Costa del Sol airport in Málaga. Details and options for this day may differ depending on the time of your flight.

Please note: If you have a late afternoon or evening flight home, you have the additional option of exploring the nearby Nerja Caves and the town of Frigiliana before departing for the airport. This is at a supplement of £35 per paying passenger.
