Chris Smitheram Teacher Tour Leader 2

Chris Smitheram

A bit about me…

I’ve been going to Iceland for 16 years taking hundreds of students and my trips there are always the favourite days of my year. I’ve been teaching Geography for over 20 years delivering various Specs for Key Stages 3-5. My current role is Deputy Headteacher and I’ve still been able to continue both in the classroom and trips overseas. I love international travel and am busy working my way through the various counties of The World. Through my school trips I’ve been overseas to France, Australia, Ireland, Iceland and Italy – where we were stranded for a couple of days as a result of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption!

Why I love being a Teacher Tour Leader…

The chance to become a Teacher Tour Leader guiding in Iceland is a bit of a dream come true. Having to visit Iceland for two reasons (my own school and now others) is brilliant. I have used Discover the World since I first visited Iceland with a school group in 2003 and have returned to the country almost every year since.

My favourite activity in Iceland…

The glacier walks are amazing. It’s not the sort of thing that I would do with my family on a holiday, so being up close to nature’s bulldozers is special.

My favourite place in Iceland…

For me it’s about the vistas. The sky feels big, the horizons seem endless, and the contrasts between ice, mountains, water, waves, and fire are breath-taking. For this reason, I find it hard to pick one place. Having said that, the area around Vik gets an honourable mention.
