Get ready for a wild adventure in Costa Rica, a tropical paradise bursting with 5% of the world’s biodiversity. You’ll stay in remote lodges nestled in prime spotting locations, giving you a front-row seat to nature’s greatest show. Imagine seeing playful monkeys and lazy sloths, tapirs, tree frogs and vibrant scarlet macaws. Then there’s the breathtaking quetzal, sea turtles, whales and dolphins, and if you’re lucky, maybe even a jaguar! Dive into the beautiful natural landscapes of this tiny country for wildlife encounters like nowhere else on earth.

Your natural immersion starts as soon as you land, with a night at the eco-conscious Xandari Resort. This former coffee plantation is set in the outskirts of San Jose amidst a tropical forest, where you can enjoy spectacular mountain views and nature trails. From here you’ll visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park for a great introduction into the biodiversity of Costa Rica.

You’ll then continue to Boca Tapada, a magical place renowned for its ecotourism as it boasts a rich diversity of fauna and flora. This remote area is characterised by lush tropical jungle and vast wetlands. You’ll be staying in unique treehouse accommodation within the protected Maquenque Wildlife Refuge. Hike through the dense forests and kayak on the Tres Rios River, both teeming with rare wildlife.

As you continue your journey east you’ll reach the impressive Arenal Volcano. Included is a visit to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges to take in the views over the jungle canopy. You’ll also join a sloth walking tour with a naturalist guide to help spot these charming but elusive creatures lounging high in the treetops.

Next stop is Carara National Park where you’ll find the famous scarlet macaws. The park also boasts one of the highest diversity of trees in the world, attracting a wealth of birdlife. Continue to the Pacific Coast and the charming resort town of Uvita, where you’ll embark on a boat tour of the Marina Ballena National Park. Explore caves and coastlines, and keep watch for dolphins and turtles, as well as humpback whales (Jul-Nov and Dec-Mar)

A 3-night stay on the Osa Peninsula will be a holiday highlight – this captivating region is the jewel of Costa Rica and the most biodiverse place in the country. Included is a guided hike through the Corcovado National Park to explore the dense rainforest and its inhabitants including jaguars, tapirs, and monkeys. You’ll also head to Isla De Cano by boat, where you can snorkel in crystal-clear waters spotting unique and colourful fish amongst the coral reef. It’s a short but scenic flight back to San Jose for a final night overlooking the city.

After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll drive to the Arenal region. This area is renowned for the majestic Arenal Volcano and its geothermal hot springs. The journey will take you through picturesque landscapes and charming rural areas, offering glimpses of Costa Rica’s natural beauty along the way. Your stay in Arenal promises to be a memorable part of your Costa Rican adventure. An afternoon hike around the base of the volcano is highly recommended.

Today, you’ll enjoy a day exploring the wonders of Arenal. Begin with a guided sloth-viewing experience to observe these charming creatures in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, visit Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park for a walk through the rainforest canopy, crossing suspension bridges and spotting various wildlife. Today you’ll travel south to the transition zone between the tropical dry forests and rainforests of Carara National Park, for 2 nights lodging at the lovely Macaw Lodge. The Lodge is off grid and was built as a sustainable concept offering an unforgettable wilderness experience.

After enjoying breakfast at the lodge we suggest hitting the trails of the Carara National Park. The main attraction for most visitors is its wildlife and especially birds – there are over 350 species here, but the star billing goes to the scarlet macaw. These large, raucous members of the parrot family add a bright splash of colour against the green of the rainforest. There are plenty of opportunities to spot monkeys and reptiles on your adventure too.

This picturesque coastal resort is known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforest, and diverse marine life, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Your 2-night stay will be at the hidden gem La Cusinga Lodge. Take some time to relax and enjoy the spectacular ocean views from your rustic cabin.

Today you can take your pick of included experiences:

Option 1: Take an exploration of the Terraba-Sierpe mangrove ecosystem, gliding through tranquil waters in a boat guided by local experts, spotting monkeys, sloths, and birds. Learn about mangrove ecology and its role in coastal ecosystems. Perfect for nature enthusiasts, this tour offers photography opportunities and an immersive experience in Uvita’s rich biodiversity. (Operates year round).

OR

Option 2: Take a Marino Ballena boat tour to spot ocean wildlife. You can see turtles and dolphins year round, but the main draw are the humpback whales that migrate here through Jan-Mar and Jul-Oct.

After lunch at your lodge you can choose to partake in an optional activity or relax and enjoy the surroundings.

After breakfast, you’ll enjoy an included excursion to the remote, protected wilderness of Corcovado National Park. This is a wonderful chance to trek through primary and secondary rainforest and see an expansive variety of flora and fauna. The boat trip to the ranger station takes approximately 30 minutes and you may spot whales and dolphins en route. On land, the trails route deep through the rainforest, and you’ll hopefully spot rare and endangered wildlife with your naturalist guide, as well as some spectacular views over the Pacific Ocean. After this must-do adventure, it’s time for lunch back at the lodge and an afternoon perhaps kayaking in the bay or relaxing on a secluded beach nearby before dinner.

Today you’ll enjoy an included excursion to Caño Island Biological Reserve, located just 12 miles from the coastline. The boat ride normally takes about 45 minutes, and you’ll have a chance to spot dolphins, turtles, and whales (seasonal and weather dependent). On arrival at Caño Island you can learn about its archaeological significance and visit the fascinating stone spheres made by the first civilisations that settled here. There’s also time to explore the forest trails and relax on sandy beaches. But the real beauty of Caño lies under the water… five platforms of protected coral reef surround the island, attracting countless species of marine life. Snorkeling in the crystal clear water you may spot a variety of colourful tropical fish, eagle rays, reef sharks, sea turtles and more.
