Overview

There are city breaks – and then there are city adventure breaks. Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, definitely falls into the latter category if you’re looking for an action-packed family escape. It’s seriously cool for teenagers (check out the trendy cafés, shops and street art) and pretty awesome for younger kids too (with everything from Viking sagas to legendary hot dogs on offer). But no matter how old you are – and that includes parents by the way – Reykjavik’s trump card is that you’ll find unbelievable adventures right on your doorstep. Read on to find out why we’re calling this new holiday ‘the ultimate city adventure break for families’…

Reykjavik is really cool

You won’t be dragging your kids around stuffy art galleries and museums in Iceland’s capital. Reykjavik’s family-friendly highlights include the Saga Museum where lifelike figures bring the country’s Viking past vividly to life, and FlyOver Iceland – a motion cinema that simulates a riveting flight over mountains and glaciers. You will definitely want to make time for the futuristic Perlan museum where you can explore an ice cave and learn about the magical northern lights. Then there are essential Reykjavik ‘rites of passage’, like ordering legendary hotdogs from the famous stand on the corner of Tryggvagata street (go for ‘the works’ with ketchup, sweet mustard, fried onion and sweet remolaði relish) and taking a dip in the Sky Lagoon – Reykjavik’s new geothermal infinity pool has to be seen to be believed. Let’s just say, there’s plenty to keep you busy in the city itself. But what makes this family break so special is that it combines the best of Reykjavik with a fantastic array of adventures.

Full-day superjeep tour included

A guaranteed highlight of your holiday, we’ve included a 4WD superjeep safari to give you a taste of the rugged volcanic landscape that epitomises the Land of Fire & Ice. Watch the grins spread across your children’s faces as one of these monster trucks pulls up outside your hotel! With their super-size wheels, they’re designed to go anywhere – in complete comfort. Your expert driver-guide will whisk you away from the city, scaling mountain tracks, fording glacial rivers and weaving through lava fields. It’s both a thrill ride and an unforgettable way to reach jaw-dropping viewpoints and learn about the geography and history of Iceland.

Huge range of optional activities

As well as the superjeep tour you can also take your pick from a smorgasbord of optional excursions – all of which we can prebook for you. Nip down to Reykjavik’s old harbour and join a whale watching boat trip in search of humpbacks, orcas and other cetaceans in Faxafloi Bay. Older children will enjoy high-speed RIB rides, but there are also plenty of gentler options for littl’uns, including puffin watching trips – or you could stay on land and enjoy a visit to the Whales of Iceland Museum. Horse riding is also possible on farms near the city, with everything from one-hour walks for novices to longer treks for experienced riders. Or how about getting in the seat of a snowmobile instead? We can arrange for you to take an exhilarating snowmobile across Langjokull icecap, with children riding as passengers.

They’ll also get a buzz from Inside the Volcano – a unique tour where you are lowered into the vast, empty magma chamber of an extinct volcano lying just to the south of the city. Boardwalks twisting through The Lava Tunnel – just 30 minutes from the city – offer an equally captivating journey to the ‘centre of the Earth’. Then there’s the extraordinary Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park where you can don drysuits to snorkel through a crystal-clear canyon at the very junction between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates! And, of course, there’s no shortage of hot water in Iceland: The Blue Lagoon, Secret Lagoon and Sky Lagoon are all within easy reach of Reykjavik for that essential Icelandic experience of a relaxing geothermal soak.

Want to do it all, but worried you won’t have enough time?

All of our holidays can be fully tailor made – let our Travel Specialists know what you want to do and they’ll happily plan a bespoke itinerary for you, whether it’s a case of adding a day or two, or extending it into a two-week holiday. We can also easily arrange a rental car if you’re looking for extra freedom and flexibility.

Itinerary

After arrival at Keflavik airport, transfer to Reykjavik and your hotel. If there’s time, perhaps take a stroll to Hallgrimskirkja, the city’s iconic cathedral with its striking statue of Norse explorer Leif Erikson standing outside, then wander down towards the harbour and try Icelandic’s iconic ‘fast food’ from the Baejarins beztu hot dog stand on Tryggvagata Street.
