Festive getaway

This holiday can also be taken at Christmas or New Year adding a dose of magic to the festive season

Overview

This short getaway offers insight into Iceland’s nature and cultural life, with two nights in Iceland’s capital and two nights in South Iceland, an ideal location for the search for the northern lights.

Spend time exploring Reykjavik with its many museums, galleries and stylish coffee shops, before venturing out into the scenic countryside beyond. Highlights include bathing in the Blue Lagoon, visiting the black lava beaches of the south coast as well as Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, travelling around the Golden Circle and meeting Icelandic horses on a local farm. Plus, hopefully, you’ll see the magical northern lights.

It is also possible to add on an optional glacier hike on Solheimajokull and an optional northern lights cruise by boat from Reykjavik.

Itinerary

After checking in to your hotel explore Reykjavik independently and enjoy dinner at one of the many fabulous restaurants that the capital has to offer.

This morning you will meet your guide who will show you the highlights of Iceland’s exciting capital. Then travel by coach to the Reykjanes Peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, lighthouses and fishing villages. At the end of the day, you will soak off our travels in the warm blue waters of the famous Blue Lagoon before checking into your hotel. In the evening you have a presentation about the Northern Lights. If the night is clear, step outside to check if the northern lights are visible. The grounds of Hotel Stracta are very large and dark that offers you an excellent location for a northern lights search if the conditions are right.

Today you will head along the South coast where you will also stop at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges over the mountain. There’s a trail that goes behind the falling water and offers impressive views if you are prepared to get wet! Further east you will visit one of Iceland’s finest folk museums. This museum contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artefacts typical of Iceland’s past, as well as turf-built houses. Nearby is Skogafoss waterfall which is 62 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country.

It is possible to book an optional glacier walk on the Solheimajökull glacier in the afternoon (subject to availability).

If you do not book the Glacier Hike, your tour will continue to the seaside and stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vik.

If the night is clear, you might be lucky enough to see the northern lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens in dramatic shapes, colours, patterns and sizes.

This morning you will learn about Icelandic Horses and visit a geothermal greenhouse. You will then travel on the Golden Circle route. You see steam from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive. There are a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur “the Churn” which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. You continue to Gullfoss “the golden falls”, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 meters into the Hvita river. Then you will travel inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site before returning to Reykjavík for one night.

Christmas and New Year

It is possible to celebrate Christmas and New Year in the countryside on this escorted tour with special Festive departures.

Christmas

On day two of the tour (24 Dec*), in the evening celebrate Christmas the Icelandic way. Before dinner, you will take a guided bus tour to visit the Christmas lights in the villages of Hvolsvöllur and Hella. The traditional Christmas lights had their origins in the Middle Ages when people needed to keep the lights in their abodes during the Winter Solstice.

Then enjoy a festive 4-course dinner at Árhús Restaurant on the river banks in Hella. Drink a toast of sparkling wine as you enjoy a real special Christmas Celebration. Naturally, once darkness falls, you are out in the garden waiting for the Northern Lights.

*In the Nordic countries it is tradition to celebrate Christmas on the 24 Dec.

New Year

On day three (31 Dec) join a guided bus tour to visit the bonfires in the villages of Hvolsvollur and Hella. The traditional Brenna bonfires of New Year’s Eve had their origins in the Middle Ages when people built bonfires to burn the old things they no longer needed. In Iceland, there are bonfires all around the country where inhabitants gather, shoot off fireworks, sing and dance as they wait for the New Year to come in.

Then enjoy a 4-course dinner at Árhús Restaurant on the river banks in Hella. Afterwards, walk through the village and celebrate New Year’s with a bang when at midnight the sky opens with thousands of fireworks set off in the village by the local inhabitants. This is an experience of a lifetime; you will never forget.
