Lace up your boots and put your best foot forward on this active adventure through some of Costa Rica’s most stunning and remote spots. You’ll explore the remote cloud forests of San Gerardo and the untouched rainforests of Sarapiqui, trek around three volcanoes, and hike to see waterfalls and rivers in jaw-dropping shades of blue. With four guided hikes and a leisurely cycle tour included, plus plenty of time for optional trail walking, you’ll experience a wide variety of landscapes and habitats on this energetic self-drive.

After an overnight stay in San Jose, you’ll head south to the stunning region of San Gerardo De Dota to embark on an exciting hike on the Paramo.  Here you’ll also search for the elusive quetzal, one of Costa Rica’s most recognisable birds.

Next head west to Turrialba, famous for its coffee plantations, sugar cane fields, and the impressive Turrialba Volcano. It’s an interesting region and you may have time to trek to the volcano as well as enjoy an included bike tour. After a 2-night stay here you’ll be heading deep into the rainforests of Sarapqiui to explore the remote Braulio National Park.

Your journey will continue into Bajos del Toro, nestled in a volcanic valley known for its stunning waterfalls, vibrant flora, and tranquil atmosphere. Spend 2 nights enjoying this serene landscape with the opportunity to hike to mighty waterfalls, or visit Poas Volcano and its huge crater.

Rio Celeste is a hidden gem in the northwest of the country and will be a highlight of your Costa Rican adventure. Here you’ll visit Tenorio National Park, view the volcano of the same name and marvel at the vivid blue waters of Rio Celeste and its waterfalls.

Your final stop will be in the volcanic region of Rincon de la Vieja, a natural adventure playground scattered with fumaroles and hot springs. You’ll take a fantastic guided hike on Las Pailas Trail, looping through tropical dry forest around the active Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.

Itinerary

The itinerary shown is an example of this self-drive holiday. We have many other route recommendations which can be tailored to your requirements. Please discuss with our Travel Specialists who can put together a bespoke itinerary for you.

You’ll be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel in San Jose.  If time permits take a walk around local area and soak up the ‘pura vida’ lifestyle of the locals. There are some great restaurants and bars to check out nearby.

Your car will be delivered to your hotel this morning to begin your journey to San Gerardo de Dota. The beautiful cloud forests of San Gerardo are renowned for exceptional birdwatching and are a prime habitat for the resplendent quetzal. On arrival you may wish to hike one of the many trails surrounding your lodge, which sits in the midst of a private reserve.

Today you’ll embark on a half day guided hike to the Paramo, a landscape like no other in Costa Rica. The Talamanca Continental Divide is the highest and wildest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America. You’ll begin in the highlands where your guide will explain the natural history, geography and wildlife of the area. During the hike you’ll take in amazing panoramic views from the mountainous divide, before heading up into cloud-shrouded forest which provides a unique wildlife habitat. The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy your surroundings.
