Well-researched route

We've put our years of experience into creating this well-paced itinerary that includes the places we know you'll enjoy

Explore two very different coastlines, from the Caribbean vibes of the southeast to the gorgeous tropical beaches of the northwest. You’ll start your journey on the Caribbean side, unwinding on the sandy shores of Puerto Viejo and discovering the fascinating wildlife of Tortuguero. Crossing through the heart of the country you’ll be wowed by the majestic volcanic landscapes of Arenal and Rincon De La Vieja, before reaching the Pacific Ocean. This leisurely self-drive strikes the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure.

This exciting itinerary starts in the capital city of San Jose, where you can enjoy a lively ambiance and great culinary options. You’ll then head to Puerto Viejo, a hidden gem unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica. Its beautiful beaches, rustic lodges and unique cultural offerings make it a perfect introduction to the diversity of Costa Rica.

Next, you’ll make your way to Tortuguero, famous for its natural waterways and tropical rainforests teeming with wildlife. You may see your first sloth climbing a tree, along with countless monkeys and toucans. Depending on the season you could also witness the incredible turtle nesting or hatching phenomenon, for which Tortuguero is renowned.

Returning inland you’ll enjoy an active stay at Arenal to marvel at the volcano, hike the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges and perhaps enjoy the region’s many hot springs. Continuing north from here you’ll discover another volcano – Rincon De La Vieja – which offers different experiences in a dynamic and distinct landscape. Explore on foot with a hike through the volcanic terrain of the volcano.

A 3-night stay on the glorious Pacific Coast provides a chance to catch up on some R & R. Kick back at the beach to enjoy the sunny hot climate – or if you’re in search of one last wildlife fix then why not take an optional trip to Palo Verde Wetlands.

Finally it’s time to head back into central Costa Rica for an overnight stay in a charming lodge in the heart of the coffee region. The slightly cooler climate should prepare you for your flight back home!

Itinerary

The itinerary shown is an example of this self-drive holiday. We have many other route recommendations which can be tailored to your requirements. Please discuss with our Travel Specialists who can put together a bespoke itinerary for you.

Upon arrival you’ll be met and transferred to your San Jose hotel. This evening why not explore the bustling streets and enjoy one of the many popular barrios offering great dining options in this often-overlooked capital.

This morning your car will be delivered to your hotel. Set off on the scenic drive to the heavenly South Caribbean coast, a very special region that offers some of the best beaches in Costa Rica and a vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture. You’ll stay in the charming beach area of Playa Chiquita in an eco-friendly bungalow, surrounded by tropical rainforest and just minutes from the sandy beach.

Today you’ll visit the stunning Cahuita National Park to embark on an included hiking & snorkelling adventure. You’ll spend 2 hours snorkeling in Costa Rica’s renowned coral reef, home to 35 coral species and diverse marine life including tropical fish and sea turtles. Afterwards you’ll continue with a 2-hour guided hike at Punta Cahuita, spotting sloths, monkeys and exotic birds. The trail also offers wonderful flora such as orchids and medicinal plants. Finish with a delicious Caribbean lunch before returning to Puerto Viejo.

Spend the day at leisure enjoying your natural surroundings, relaxing at the beach and swimming in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. You may wish to visit the nearby jaguar rescue centre, or explore the colourful town of Puerto Viejo with its arty shops and diverse and tasty eateries. If you’re feeling energetic, hiring a bike is a great way to get about and see as much as possible.

Your journey today will take you further north along the coast to Tortuguero with its magical canals and abundant wildlife. During the gentle boat ride to your lodge, you’ll start to observe the rich biodiversity of the region. After lunch, you’ll embark on an afternoon visit to the picturesque village of Tortuguero to learn about important conservation efforts for the sea turtles who nest on the protected shoreline.

Today you’ll cruise the canals of the national park on a small boat, so you can feel a pure connection with the natural habitat around you. You’re likely to spot white-faced and howler monkeys, three-toed sloths, caimans, plus a plethora of exotic, colourful birds. This afternoon enjoy the hotel’s nature trails, or take an optional excursion back through the canals by kayak or to climb Tortuguero Hill.
