Overview

Pack your appetite and explore a city on the rise in the culinary world. The historic city of Trondheim, once a Viking capital, is now becoming a foodie destination known for its fresh, seasonal ingredients and focus on local, sustainable cuisine.

The Trøndelag Food and Brewery Festival takes place in August and the city erupts into culinary activities.  Foodies, baristas, families and beer brewing enthusiasts celebrate the food culture of Trøndelag with over 200 local producers.  Year round, whether you crave Michelin-star worthy creations or cosy cafes with traditional fare, bustling markets overflowing with fresh seafood to innovative restaurants pushing the boundaries of Nordic cuisine, Trondheim has something to tempt every palate.

Trondheim is a city rich in history and culture, making it a perfect destination for a city break. Admire Nidaros Cathedral, stroll across the Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge) and explore the picturesque Bakklandet neighbourhood with its colourful wooden houses. Learn about Norway’s Viking history at the Sverresborg Trondelag Folk Museum or hike up to the Kristiansten Fortress, a 17th-century defensive fortification that offers panoramic views of the city.

No matter what your interests are, you’re sure to find something to enjoy in Trondheim. The city is compact and walkable, making it easy to explore on foot. And with its friendly locals and beautiful scenery, Trondheim is a city that will stay with you long after you leave.

Itinerary

On arrival in Trondheim make your way by airport shuttle bus, train or taxi to your hotel in the city (payable locally).  Stay for 3 nights at the Thon Hotel Nidaros on breakfast basis.

Start your day with a visit to the Nidaros Cathedral , a magnificent Gothic-style structure and Norway’s national shrine, perhaps take a guided tour to learn about its rich history and admire its intricate architecture. A short walk from the cathedral is the delightful Streif Bakery and Café a lovely stop for lunch.

This afternoon head to the bustling Torvet market square . Browse through the stalls overflowing with fresh, local produce, flowers, and handicrafts. Sample some cloudberries, a local specialty, or grab a delicious bite from a food vendor.

Trondheim boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants, Fagn and Speilsalen (pre booking essential, please note restaurants may not be open daily), where you can experience creative and beautifully presented dishes using the freshest seasonal ingredients.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Trondheim harbour. Enjoy the scenic views, watch the ships sail by, and visit the harbour stalls or local restaurants to sample some fresh seafood delicacies.

Across the Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge) explore the picturesque Bakklandet neighbourhood with its cobbled streets and colourful wooden houses.

Depending on your flight departure, you may have time to see more of the city before making your way back to the airport by Airport Flybus service, train or taxi (payable locally) for your flight home.
