Overview

With its extraordinary beauty and wealth of volcanic and geothermal features, North Iceland is the perfect option for those wanting to immerse themselves in a world of dramatic landscapes, wildlife encounters and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Included in this 5-day trip is a thrilling Superjeep safari, ideal for exploring wild and out of the way places.

Siglufjordur

The small fishing town of Siglufjordur sits on a narrow fjord of the same name. Its heritage lies in the herring industry, but it has achieved more modern fame as the location for Iceland’s acclaimed TV series ‘Trapped’.

Lake Myvatn

The stunning Lake Myvatn has a unique and special lure, offering an incredible array of volcanic features including craters, lava flows, mud pools and hot springs. Set against a backdrop of mountains and fringed by atmospheric lava formations, this shallow lake, which is often frozen in winter, will surprise and enchant.

Superjeep Safari

An inextricable part of Iceland’s modern culture, superjeeps can take you to places where conventional cars simply aren’t able to venture to. These modified four wheel drive vehicles have high ground clearance, massive studded tyres and the latest safety and navigation equipment to really get you “off the beaten track”. During the winter months, your Superjeep safari will take you on an excursion to three remote waterfalls, including the famous Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Over the summer, you will be taken out to the lava fields of Askja and Holuhraun, where you’ll be able to hike or simply sit by the stream and enjoy the peace of the Icelandic Highlands.

Itinerary

Arrive in Akureyri and collect your rental vehicle, before venturing over to Siglufjordur. You’ll be spending two nights in this small town, which is tucked into a spectacular fjord and hemmed in by mountains. Siglufjordur was originally established as a herring fishing port and the Herring Era Museum is well worth a visit.

Soak up the relaxed atmosphere of this picture-postcard village. Hotel Siglo has an outdoor hot tub and a wonderful restaurant overlooking the marina. Enjoy lunch at one of the excellent cafes dotted amongst Siglufjordur’s historic and colourful harbourside buildings and take time to watch the world go by.

If it takes your fancy, you can do an optional boat trip across the Arctic Circle from here or try your luck fishing on the Holsa River. Siglufjordur is a rewarding spot for hiking, with plenty of trails leading into the mountains and along the coast.

The scenic drive between Sigliufjordur and Myvatn holds countless opportunities for new experiences. Take a detour up to Husavik, where you can choose optional activities such as a whale watching or a snowmobile excursion. On the way there you can also visit Grenjadarstadur, a wonderful old turf parsonage and folk museum (open June to August) – nearby is the Laxa Power Station.

Whilst in Myvatn you will experience a variety of natural wonders at this spring-fed lake. From Hverir’s flatulent sulphur springs and Krafla’s steaming lava fields to the Hverfjall’s lunar crater and the atmospheric lava formations of Dimmuborgir, Myvatn will take your breath away!

You will have two nights in Myvatn while you enjoy all that this area has to offer.  On clearer nights between September and mid-April, remember to keep an eye out for northern lights in the sky.

Today is another opportunity to further explore the Lake Myvatn area. The distinctive natural features here provide the backdrop for a range of activities and your trip includes a Superjeep safari to Dettifoss if you are travelling during the winter months, or to Askja and Holuhraun during the summer months.

Super Jeeps are specially modified four wheel drive vehicles that can drive almost anywhere and are an obsession for most Icelanders! The Dettifoss waterfall tour takes you on a tour of three spectacular waterfalls, including Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The Askja and Holuhraun tour takes you to the lava fields here, where you will be able to hike and enjoy the views with a local guide.

After a long day of adventure and activity, perhaps relax in the warm, milky waters of the Myvatn Nature Baths, the North’s answer to the Blue Lagoon (entrance payable locally).

  • 4WD

We would always recommend a 4WD for winter travel, but many clients also prefer the greater security and comfort that a larger vehicle provides year round – upgrade your vehicle from as little as £10 per person, per day.

  • Go electric

With a selection of electric cars now available including the Kia Niro and Volkswagen ID.3, you can choose to upgrade from as little as £12 per person, per day. We recommend this option for summer only, due to the colder temperatures in winter affecting battery range.
