Del Toro Waterfall Hike, Bajos Del Toro

2 hours | Year round

Plummeting 90 metres into an extinct dormant volcanic crater, the jaw-dropping Catarata del Toro is one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular waterfalls – and there are some strong contenders!

Take in the views from the top before tackling a challenging but rewarding 30-minute guided hike down a steep jungle path, with breathtaking viewpoints along the way. You’re likely to encounter brightly-coloured butterflies and hummingbirds, or even spot an armadillo. Your guide is on hand to point out wildlife and the different plant species as you go.

Descending 375 steps you’ll reach the base of the waterfall, surrounded by lush green cliffs carpeted in moss. The rocks are streaked in reds and oranges, a result of old lava flows and the acidic mineral-rich water of the falls. There’s time to soak in the views and enjoy a refreshing swim before making your way back up through the cloud forest.
