When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Claire: Any time! It depends on your preferences for weather, activities, and budget. Pleasant average yearly temperatures are well into the mid 20’s in most regions, and all seasons have their charm. The dry season from December to April is sunnier and warmer, so great for coastal stays, but this also means it can be busier and more expensive. The green (wetter) season is from May to November, so fewer visitors and lower prices… but still plenty of sunshine! When the rain pours in the South Pacific in September and October, the Caribbean sun comes out. There will always be a good fit!

How do I decide where to go?

Phoebe: Wherever you go, you’re sure to encounter an abundance of wildlife. Each region offers a diverse range of activities, from hiking through the rainforests of the Osa Peninsula to whale watching off the beaches of Uvita and cruising down the canals of Tortuguero – making it the perfect destination for everyone!

Lauren: The great thing is that you’ll encounter incredible wildlife and scenery everywhere. Combine both coasts for a real contrast in landscapes and weather!

Claire: Being a tiny country, no matter where you go you’ll see amazing wildlife, lush rainforests, impressive volcanos, beautiful beaches, super friendly locals and hotels to suit all budgets.

What are the top things to do in Costa Rica?

Phoebe: Hiking in Corcovado National Park is an absolute highlight! The abundance of wildlife in such a compact area is astounding. Trying the local cuisine is fun – Gallo Pinto has quickly become my new favourite breakfast! For wildlife enthusiasts, the sloth walking tour in Arenal is another must-do experience. In one word: WOW!

Claire: Get off the beaten track! Go quetzal spotting or hiking around the quiet cloud forests of San Gerardo De Dota. Kayak on the remote Tres Rios River near Boca Tapada and be the only visitor other than wildlife. Skip the crowds and enjoy the wild unspoiled beaches and cultural vibes of Puerto Viejo – don’t miss a hike in Cahuita National Park.

Lauren: The Osa Peninsula is a must do! It is remote, offers incredible wildlife, views, beaches, rainforest and more! A true untouched gem! A Sloth Walking Tour in La Fortuna is a must for anyone; and no visit to Costa Rica is complete without a walk on a hanging bridge! Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges offers a great experience surrounded by monkeys, birds, rainforest. Just don’t look down!

How do I get there?

Claire: Currently BA flies direct from Gatwick to San Jose from November to March. From April to October there are numerous routes with great connections via the USA or Europe from most UK airports.

What’s the best way to get around?

Phoebe: Exploring the country on a self-drive is the best way to see it at your own pace. Locals recommend using Waze instead of Google Maps for real-time traffic updates. The roads are generally long and wide, offering incredible scenery throughout your journey. There are also numerous small domestic airports scattered around the country, making small planes a convenient alternative for those who prefer not to drive.

Claire: The best way is self-drive, giving you the freedom to do and see as much as possible. Overall roads are good and well signed and its better value than taking private transfers place to place. However, if you are happy with prebooked minibus services between locations this is a great and economical way to see the country and avoid driving.

Lauren: Driving is a fantastic way to explore and allows you to maximise your time and experiences. The roads are in good condition, however, be prepared for diversions with the Waze App!

Is Costa Rica a luxury destination or can I visit on a budget?

Claire: Yes, and yes! The joy of Costa Rica is that there is genuinely something to suit everyone’s taste and budget. In the main tourist areas such as Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and Guanacaste there are some outstanding luxury hotels and wilderness lodges, but also many standard properties. Elsewhere boutique hotels & rustic lodges from basic to superior are available everywhere, allowing everyone to enjoy the highlights of the country whatever your budget.

Lauren: Costa Rica offers some beautiful accommodation which is always in keeping with your natural surroundings.  Whether you stay at a luxury property or not the Costa Ricans provide a great service and go out of their way to ensure you have an incredible experience.
