Amazing images of an erupting volcano at Litli-Hrútur in Iceland, July 2023

For the third successive year, a volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula has erupted. It started on the 10 July 2023 following days of earthquakes in the region. Initially producing smoke, a large fissure, around 1km in length, soon opened up pushing vibrant, red magma through the surface between Fagradalsfjall and Keilir mountains.

As with the 2021 and 2022 eruptions, the current eruption is away from infrastructure with the lava flowing into an uninhabited valley. A hiking trail of around 20km return opened to visitors to witness this incredible display of nature.

Photographer Ragnar TH Sigurðsson, a long-term friend of Discover the World, has again captured amazing images of the eruption, shared below.
