Selva Verde Lodge, Sarapiquí

Set within a 500-acre private reserve, this friendly rainforest eco-lodge is a great place to hang out with resident howler monkeys, kinkajous, and jaw-dropping array of native birdlife.

Selva Verde isn’t just another lodge – it’s your ticket to one of the most accessible rainforests around and the perfect spot to get hands-on with conservation. The lodge is designed with the environment in mind, with elevated buildings and wooden walkways weaving through primary and secondary rainforest without leaving a trace.

The guest rooms are simple but cosy – choose from lodge rooms, riverside rooms and secluded rainforest bungalows. All 45 rooms are designed to blend in with their surroundings and feature wooden furnishings, ceiling fans or air conditioning, private bathroom, and a private balcony.

The lodge has two restaurants, a bar, gift shop and swimming pool, but its real draw is the nature and wildlife that surrounds it. Selva Verde offers a range of optional activities from guided rainforest hikes and birding tours to cruises, kayak trips and rafting adventures on the Sarapiquí River, as well as conservation experiences and community projects. You can visit a nearby school, learn to cook traditional dishes or even take a Latin dance class with the local experts!

Sustainability at Selva Verde

As a trailblazer in eco-tourism, Selva Verde is all about protecting the incredible wildlife, plants, and people of Sarapiquí. The lodge co-founded the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC), a non-profit organisation which links communities and conservation through education and ecotourism with a view to improving long-term job prospects for the locals. Selva Verde’s Green Classroom programme also ensures the younger generations are taught the importance of preserving the area’s natural resources. The lodge has also adopted various sustainable practices in its day to day operations, such as solar panels, recycling, composting, and the use of biodegradable cleaning products and natural fertilisers.
