Maquenque Ecolodge and Treehouses, near Boca Tapada

Strategically situated within the Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge and bordered by the majestic San Carlos River, the family-owned Maquenque Ecolodge provides a warm welcome in an unforgettable setting. With 68 acres of rainforest and wetlands on its doorstep, home to nearly 600 exotic bird species, this hidden gem is a must for nature lovers and birders.

The lodge’s unique accommodation options include 10 lofty treehouses perched high in the canopy as well as 15 rustic bungalows. Sit back on your private balcony or terrace to enjoy rainforest and lagoon views, keeping your eyes peeled for exotic birds and wildlife. Maquenque’s restaurant is another favourite hang-out spot, with a panoramic backdrop of lagoons and mountains as you tuck into typical Costa Rican fare or wood-fired pizzas.

Maquenque Ecolodge has its own enticing pool and a spa, but if you’re feeling energetic there’s also a selection of nature trails to discover, as well as use of the lodge’s canoes to explore the surrounding lagoons and waterways. Optional experiences can be arranged too – perhaps take a river cruise all the way to the Nicaraguan border, with the chance to spot crocodiles, kingfishers and vultures along the way. Or take a guided kayak trip, venture into the jungle on a night hike, or search for the rare great green macaw on a birdwatching tour.

Sustainability at Maquenque

One of the highlights of Maquenque Ecolodge is its commitment to conservation and the environment. The lodge has implemented a comprehensive waste management system that includes recycling, composting, and organic gardening; its water is sourced from natural springs and the lodge is powered by solar energy. Maquenque Eco Lodge also finances free environmental education for local schools and operates a tree planting programme for guests.
