Outdoor Activities and Wildlife

The breathtaking wilderness provides the perfect backdrop for year-round outdoor adventures, offering activities to suit every season.

In the summer, guests can choose from a variety of guided excursions or explore at their own pace. Popular activities include swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and hiking. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy birdwatching, as large numbers of migrating birds nest here during the summer months, alongside opportunities to spot beavers, moose, and even flying squirrels.

One of the area’s most unique and unforgettable experiences is bear-watching. A 45-minute drive takes you to an idyllic setting within the natural habitat of these majestic creatures. Guests can choose between an evening bear-watching tour or an overnight stay in a hide, maximising the chances of seeing these magnificent animals up close. The hides also offer exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography.

As late August approaches, the Northern Lights begin to illuminate the skies, offering another magical experience. The late summer and autumn months are also ideal for foraging, with an abundance of wild berries and mushrooms waiting to be discovered.

During the winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland, where snowmobiling, husky sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe hiking are among the many thrilling activities available.

Events

The region is also celebrated for its vibrant cultural scene. Among the standout events and attractions are the world-renowned Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, held every July at the Kuhmo House, the Kalevala Culture Centre Juminkeko, which offers captivating exhibitions on Finnish folklore and heritage, and the Winter War Museum, where history comes to life through powerful exhibits detailing the battle sites of the Winter War.
